Hello all, its Tuesday June 9.
The Met Office has issued a nationwide heatwave alert till June 12, warning that temperatures could reach as high as 51°C in parts of Sindh and Balochistan. Karachi is expected to see highs of 40–43°C this week so stay hydrated everyone. It’s a rough week.

The Budget announcement may be delayed as the federal govt and provinces remain deadlocked over the federal govt’s request for more than Rs1 trillion in additional funds for ‘strategic needs’. The National Economic Council (NEC) meeting (which will finalise the budget) has now been postponed three times, raising doubts about whether the budget can be presented on June 10 as planned. Provinces have opposed freezing their NFC shares (their legally guaranteed share of federal tax revenues), warning it could push them into budget deficits. KP officials say the dispute has become political rather than technical and want consultation with Imran Khan before any major decisions are made.
PPP is set to form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan after winning 11 of the 24 assembly seats in Saturday’s election, making it the largest party in the region. According to unofficial results, PML-N secured six seats, PTI-backed candidates won two, MWM won one and independents took four seats. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari declared victory and said PPP would move to form the govt. Meanwhile, the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission has ordered recounts in two constituencies and re-polling at three polling stations after candidates raised concerns about irregularities.
FIA chief Usman Anwar says passengers are only offloaded from flights when there are credible concerns about human smuggling, trafficking or visa abuse, not to stop genuine travellers from going abroad. He said stricter airport screening has reduced irregular migration to the EU by 64% in early 2026 and brought illegal migration through Malawi, Africa down to zero. The FIA has identified routes through Belarus, Cyprus, Central Asia and parts of Eastern Europe as key transit corridors used by human smuggling networks, which often lure people with false promises of jobs, education and settlement abroad.

US-Iran War: Ceasefire Holding
Iran and Israel have halted their latest exchange of attacks, but tensions remain high. Iran says its military operations against Israel have ended for now and flights have resumed at Tehran’s main airport, including Hajj flights. However, Tehran warned it would respond forcefully if Israel continues strikes, particularly in Lebanon.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with Iran confirming that talks with the US are continuing through Pakistani mediation. Both sides are exchanging proposals but have not yet agreed on a final deal. Iran’s UN envoy expressed hope that an agreement could be reached by the end of June and Iran’s foreign minister said that the deal is to end the war and not to normalise relations with the US.
President Trump also warned Netanyahu against restarting a wider war with Iran, telling him Israel could end up “on its own” if it continued escalating the conflict. Trump later spoke with Netanyahu again following the latest clashes, after Netanyahu didn’t listen to him about not attacking Iran.

A bioscience company that is working towards ‘de-extinction’ has hatched 26 chicks from artificial eggs that require no additional oxygen. The company claims that the process could bring back extinct birds (although some scientists don’t agree). Check out how here.
