Prize money announced
Peshawar Zalmi defeated the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the PSL final last night
A new week on Monday, May 4.
I’ve been spending a lot of time at The University of Central Punjab, which I am thoroughly enjoying. It’s been so great to be part of student life, with so many possibilities. I routinely go up to their library, which is almost a whole floor in the building and browse through the books.
I came across archives of old magazines, including The Herald, which is now discontinued but was one of Pakistan’s best news magazines, published by Dawn Media Group. I worked there for a few months and I can’t tell you, the joy it is to really give a story time and effort, and watch it grow into something original, something that makes a difference. I've urged all of The Current’s young staff to read stories in the magazines from the 90s and the 2000s to understand what it means to report and write…slow and steady.
But oh well, we’re all used to fast news and fast scrolling now and it takes a lot to make us slow down. Pictures to follow because why not?

Peshawar Zalmi clinched their second Pakistan Super League title, beating Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final at Lahore, in front of a jam-packed stadium of 32,461 fans. Aaron Hardie delivered a standout all-round performance, taking four wickets and scoring an unbeaten 56 to anchor the chase of 130. Despite an early batting collapse, Zalmi recovered through a strong partnership and sealed the win in the 16th over, joining multiple-time PSL champions. The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed the prize money for Pakistan Super League Season 11, with the winning team set to receive $500,000 and the runners-up $300,000. An additional $200,000 will be awarded to the franchise with the best player development programme, marking a first for the league.
Punjab police is facing internal unrest after 10 officers, many nearing retirement, were transferred to “hard areas” in KP and Balochistan, despite policy expectations that younger officers would be sent. Officers have raised concerns over health, timing (amid training courses), and what they call a deviation from the 2020 rotation policy. The IG Police says the issue is being taken up with Islamabad, while the Establishment Division insists the rotation policy is currently suspended and calls the move only a temporary “stopgap arrangement.”
A joint study between Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services and UNICEF found that 4 in 10 toddlers in cities have dangerous levels of lead in their blood. PTI slammed the govt over the findings, calling it a “national disgrace,” warning of severe health impacts like brain damage, reduced IQ, and long-term illness among children. Children in Haripur and Hattar are suffering from an alarming 88 per cent contamination rate, and millions of others across major cities.
Trump says the US will start “Project Freedom” today to guide neutral ships out of the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran is warning any US interference could break the ceasefire. Tehran is also reviewing Washington’s response to its 14-point peace plan, while Trump has already called Iran’s proposal “unacceptable”. At sea, a tanker near the UAE was hit by unknown projectiles and a bulk carrier was attacked off Iran (no one knows who attacked it and no one has taken responsibility yet), though crews are reportedly safe. Meanwhile, Israel and Hezbollah continue trading fire in southern Lebanon, keeping tensions high across the region.
There will be a time today when you will dance with excitement. Let it all out and enjoy the moment.
