Secretly buried
15 year old strangled, father's phone is off
Hello all, its Friday May 8.
Yesterday, I accidentally wrote Wednesday instead of Thursday and The Current’s Executive Editor Abdullah very quickly pointed it out. My sincerest apologies! I would never want to rob anyone of being one day closer to the weekend (including myself).
Also, a birthday shoutout to one of our young readers! Happy belated 13th birthday Amin Abdullah! Hope you have a great year and I’m so impressed! Look how amazing 13-year-olds are, reading newsletters and what not!
News wise, there was hope again yesterday that this war was coming to an end, you could finally open up your stock market app without crying after seeing all that RED but obviously, aise kaise. The US launched fresh attacks against Iran last night but says ceasefire still in place. Also, this Cambridge exam leaks is becoming a big issue and this week also marks the Marka-e-Haq conflict with India. And a shocking story out of Sanghar in Sindh. In highlights below.
See you all now on Sunday!

In an ISPR press conference yesterday, the armed forces marked one year since the 2025 Marka-e-Haq conflict with India as ISPR DG Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the military is “prepared for future war” and had “placed India where they are.” Military officials also reiterated there was “no space for war” between two nuclear neighbours, while Air Vice Marshal Tariq Ghazi repeated claims that the air force shot down eight Indian aircrafts during the 2025 clashes. The briefing also touched on Pakistan’s ties with Saudi Arabia, internal politics, Afghanistan and the changing nature of modern warfare.
A 15-year-old girl was allegedly killed and secretly buried inside her home in Sanghar, Sindh, in a case police say may have happened nearly a week ago. Authorities recovered the body after a relative told the police, while the girl’s parents and other family members reportedly fled before officers arrived.
Police suspect the teenager may have been strangled to death and say investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the killing. The victim’s father is currently missing and his phone is switched off as police continue search efforts.
Cambridge International Education (CIE) has cancelled the AS-level Mathematics paper that was “prematurely shared” (read: leaked) and announced a replacement exam on June 9. CIE said there would be no extra charges for schools or candidates and confirmed that the August 11 result date would remain unchanged. The board added that it had consulted school leaders before deciding on the retake.
Pakistan registered a record 4,082 new companies in April, pushing the total number of registered firms in the country close to the 300,000 mark, according to the SECP. Officials said the increase reflects growing investor confidence and a shift towards a more documented economy. Punjab led business activity with over 2,000 new registrations, while the IT and e-commerce sector remained the fastest-growing industry with 832 new companies. Foreign investment also remained active, with shareholders from 22 countries registering companies in Pakistan. China emerged as the leading foreign investor with 95 shareholders involved in new registrations.
CEASEFIRE BROKEN?
Last night, clashes broke out between Iran and the US despite an ongoing ceasefire, after Tehran accused Washington of attacking an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran said it retaliated by targeting American naval ships, while the US military claimed Iranian forces launched missiles, drones and fast boats at three US destroyers transiting the strait. Donald Trump later said the US had inflicted “great damage” on Iranian attackers but insisted the ceasefire remained in place and confirmed Washington was still negotiating with Tehran.
The US and Gulf Arab states are now drafting a new UN Security Council resolution demanding Iran stop attacks on merchant vessels, sea mining and attempts to impose tolls in the waterway.
Iranian officials confirmed they are reviewing Pakistan-mediated messages from the US but said no response has yet been given, while Trump publicly praised Pakistan’s leadership and said Islamabad had asked Washington not to proceed with “Project Freedom” during negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iran condemned Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, Israel carried out fresh raids in southern Lebanon.
You’ll feel sick but you still can’t take the day off. That person who secretly wants your life is watching you, wanting you to slip up. Don’t risk it.
To mark one year since Pakistan's decisive response to Indian aggression in May last year, we look back at the military press conference that made us proud while cracking us up.
