This morning reveals a trillion rupee mistake made by the outgoing auditor general who refused to admit what went wrong. How did it happen?
In August a controversial report came out that claimed that the auditor general of Pakistan (AGP), Muhammad Ajmal Gondal had uncovered irregularities that came to Rs. 375 trillion in federal finances. That’s an insane number and it seemed almost impossible that alleged corruption worth trillions had taken place. The media questioned Gondal and his office. ‘Are you sure this isn’t a mistake?’ It can’t be trillions.
Gondal stood firm and said, ‘bilkul nahi’, additionally expressing concern that only 13 percent of the public funds had been directed to public goods. He also gave a statement saying that the AGP office “strongly rejected recent media reports alleging miscalculations in the federal audit reports, terming them entirely unfounded and misleading.”
Well, as he makes his way out and his successor takes control, the AGP office has admitted there had been a mistake and they are blaming ‘typos’ for that discrepancy. Instead of writing billions of rupees, they wrote trillions in the report.
The fresh report now says: “The executive summary of the original version of the Consolidated Audit Report uploaded on the [AGP’s website] had a few typos. At two places, the word ‘trillion’ had been used instead of ‘billion’. The actual amount after rectification is Rs.9.769 trillion.”
The actual number is also terrifyingly high but definitely much less than 375 trillion. Let’s hope the focus is now on where the irregularities are and who is responsible.
